Guardian Safety Wire Systems
Guardian can provide you with advice and proposals for the installation, repair, inspection and testing of most types of safety restraint and arrest wire systems.

A safety wire system can be an essential ingredient when setting up safe systems of work for building access and maintenance, but should always be considered as a 'last resort' when considering controls to be implemented as a result of risk assessment.

When accessing your requirements for falls from height protection it is essential that you remember the hierarchy of control that must be used during your risk evaluation. The risk assessments should look at ways to avoid, prevent or reduce risks.

Can working at height be avoided ?

Can safe systems of work be put in place to prevent or reduce any risks?

If there are no other alternatives, consider the use of equipment or other methods to minimise the distance and consequences of a fall should one occur i.e. PPE equipment.

Mansafe or safety wires systems fall into category 3 of the hierarchy of control and should only be considered once all other alternatives have been considered.

The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER)

Regulation 12 places responsibility on every employer to ensure that persons using work equipment are protected from any hazard as far as reasonably practicable. These measures shall be other than the provision of Personal Protective equipment or information, instruction, training and supervision.

Regulation 22 requires that equipment is constructed or adapted in a way that takes account of the risk associated with carrying out maintenance work. Compliance with this Regulation will help to ensure that when maintenance work is carried out, it is possible to do it safely and without risk to Health, as required by section 2 of the Health and Safety at Work Act.
